My name is Lauren Chiardio. Welcome to my site. Throughout this site you will find a few of my literary compositions in which I have completed during my time thus far at Syracuse University, where I am studying Inclusive Early Childhood and Special Education. I have always known I wanted to work with children, so when I received the news that I had been accepted to Syracuse’s education program, I was thrilled to say the least. During my first semester I was able to take part in my first teaching practicum, where I made weekly trips to Jowonio, the local pre-k. At Jowonio, I was able to interact with students, and directly observe the unique dynamics of a fully inclusive classroom. This experience was total validation for my desire of one day becoming an educator. Seeing the way each child was welcomed for their diversities was inspirational. “One day, I want to be that type of teacher,” I had thought; And still, today, I want the same. I want my classroom to one day be the embodiment of inclusion, where every child is acknowledged for their diversification, and cognizant of their contributions.
“Each human being, however small or weak, has something to bring to humanity. As we start to really get to know others, as we begin to listen to each other’s stories, things begin to change. We begin the movement from exclusion to inclusion, from fear to trust, from closedness to openness, from judgment and prejudice to forgiveness and understanding. It is a movement of the heart.” -Jean Vanier
